What's CBD and What's the Big Deal?

Updated: Mar 25, 2023

CBD products and the use of CBD have been on the rise for years. It's almost become commonplace in this day and age.

Firstly, what exactly is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is another compound found in cannabis, CBD is not psychoactive and does not produce a "high" when consumed. CBD has gained popularity in recent years for its potential health benefits, and it is commonly used as a natural remedy for anxiety, pain, inflammation, and other conditions. CBD can be extracted from the cannabis plant and formulated into various products, such as oils, capsules, creams, and edibles.

What does it do?

Topical CBD products, such as creams, lotions, and balms, are applied directly to the skin and are absorbed locally in the area where they are applied. When applied topically, CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in regulating a variety of physiological processes, including pain perception, inflammation, and immune function.

Some of the potential benefits of topical CBD include:

  1. Pain relief: CBD has been shown to have analgesic properties, meaning it can help alleviate pain. When applied topically, CBD may help reduce pain and inflammation in the area where it is applied.

  2. Inflammation reduction: CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation in the skin and other tissues. This makes it potentially beneficial for treating conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

  3. Skin health improvement: CBD has antioxidant properties, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. It may also help regulate oil production in the skin, making it potentially beneficial for treating oily skin and acne.

  4. Relaxation: CBD has been shown to have calming and relaxing effects, which can help reduce stress and promote relaxation when applied topically.

How do you use CBD in massage and why should I consider it as part of my treatment plan?

I use a variety of topical CBD products in my practice (all are free of THC). It's applied in specific areas of pain you'd like addressed. This is a great option if you suffer from chronic pain, joint pain from arthritis, or even acute pain from a recent injury or car accident. CBD is an excellent compliment to soft tissue bodywork and can help you find the relief you're looking for.
